SIS 5 Cross-border mobility technology initiatives around the world
Information
Session Organiser: Michele Mueller, Michigan Department of Transportation, United States
Improvements to border crossings’ throughput, safety and efficient management of disruptions through mobility technology initiatives yield material benefits to the broader economy and the wellbeing of local and regional communities. Michigan and Ontario are each other’s largest trade partner and have particular significance for the automotive sector and its electrification. MDOT recently completed, together with the OCI a study for advanced technology solutions for the border crossings and is currently proceeding with the second phase of the planning effort and proofs-of-concept for initiatives. ERTICO is working on equivalent initiatives in Europe, including the 5G MOBIX project, with the purpose to develop and evaluate automated vehicle functionalities and the GUIDE Project, which is a support action that aims in seamless cross-border interoperability, along with initiatives from VTT for improvements in cross-border logistics in the Baltic Region. In parallel, similar initiatives are underway in Australia for cross border harmonization of C-ITS to support widescale cross border deployment of digital technology for road safety. The panel discussion will focus on the challenges that border crossings face, experience from international planning efforts, key initiatives underway and planned for the future, as well as transferability of concepts.
